It is known that the electrical properties of the human body are different during different physiological states, and that the human body has an electrical potential difference, called the bioelectrical impedance. For example, the human body has electrical potential difference between the arms and legs, between the head and the chest, between the skin of the trunk and the skin of the fingers. The greater the electrical potential difference, the greater the impedance is between two parts of the body.
The bioelectrical impedance can be measured between two selected parts of the body when the body is immersed in a conductive material such as saline. As shown in FIG. 3A, an impedance meter is inserted between the two selected parts of the body. The impedance meter, which includes a capacitor, measures the impedance between two electrodes, which are in contact with the body. The bioelectrical potential difference is changed due to the insertion of the impedance meter, and an electric current flows between the two electrodes. The electric current changes with the bioelectrical potential difference, so that the bioelectrical potential difference can be determined from the electric current.
Furthermore, the bioelectrical impedance of the body can be measured using an electrode assembly as shown in FIG. 3B. The electrode assembly includes a first electrode 20 that is formed by a first coil 22 wound around a core, a second electrode 30 that is formed by a second coil 32 wound around a core, and a capacitor 34 disposed between the two coils 22 and 32. The bioelectrical potential difference between two selected parts of the body, e.g., the trunk and the fingers, is changed due to the insertion of the electrode assembly. The electric current flowing through the two coils 22 and 32 is changed with the bioelectrical potential difference between the two selected parts of the body, so that the bioelectrical potential difference can be determined from the electric current.
When measuring the bioelectrical impedance between two selected parts of the body, the measured value has an offset voltage. The reason for the offset voltage is as follows. In both cases shown in FIGS. 3A and 3B, the magnetic fields are generated between the electrodes and the body.
